My Summer No-Base-Makeup Face

Well, I finally done it, guys. Put my face up on the Internet, spots and all.

I decided that this summer, I’m going to stop wearing BB cream and foundation and just let my face go au naturel except for sunscreen and a bit of point makeup. My reasons for this are threefold:

  1. My skin is just so much happier without base makeup. My pores get clogged far less, my face is less dry and flaky, and my skin is much glowier. Also, no itchiness. I’ve tried dozens of BB creams and they all make my face itch just a little. My favorite is Dr. Jart Gold, but although it’s the least irritating, I’ve still noticed that my skin is better without it.
  2. It’s summer in Southern California, which means I’m outside a lot in the pool, at the park, or at the beach with the kids, and I need to reapply sunscreen. Sunscreens become less effective over time, so its recommended that you reapply every two hours, and that’s just not possible with makeup on.
  3. My skin has gotten so much better since I started using an Asian skincare routine that I no longer feel the need to cover it up. Yes, I still have sun spots and some issues with pigmentation, and at 32 I’m starting to get a few fine lines, but in general I’m pretty happy with where I am.

On my face:

Sunscreen: Biore UV Aqua Rich Whitening Essence SPF50+ PA++++

Undereye Concealer: Skinfood Salmon Dark Circle Concealer in 02

Blush: Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush in Adored

Eyeliner: Dolly Wink in Dark Brown (yeah I could have done a better job with that today)

Lips: Skinfood Tomato Tint Jelly in #1

Are you changing up your routine/makeup habits for the summer? I’d love to hear from you!

  1. Getting to this point is the goal with my skincare routine. I just feel better when I do not have foundation on my face.

    • Me too, I just feel like my skin can finally breathe. Any blemishes I get stay really small and heal a lot faster too when I’m not suffocating them with a layer of makeup.

  2. I am kind of heading into the opposite direction right now; having recently discovered Asian beauty products, at the tender age of 39, I am looking for a BB cream that will work well for me. I literally never wear a foundation or powder – well, nothing beyond my skin lotion and serum, – and while I have been lucky wrinkle-wise, I hate my ginormous pores and extremely oily face, so I am thinking that the right BB cream might be the answer to my woes. Blogs like yours are truly helpful for an Asian Beauty Newbie (and generally makeup-stupid person) like myself, so thank you for taking the time to share your experiences!

    • I’m actually kind of a makeup noob myself; I never experimented with makeup as a teen and am just discovering it as an adult. I don’t know if I can help with BB cream recommendations, as my skin is more on the dry side and I’m always looking for something to keep it moisturized throughout the day. I have liked Skin79 gold and Missha Perfect Cover (something in the perfect cover irritated my face, but the coverage was great).

If you want to control oil and pores throughout the day, perhaps a silicone-based primer might help? Innisfree also has a translucent powder (no-sebum powder) that helps tremendously to control oil throughout the day. Hope that helps!

      • Thank you for the advice! I am still waiting for my first ever RRS haul to arrive (their relaunch sale is the bomb diggity!) and there is some primer in there. My AB journey is just beginning. 🙂
