I can’t believe how fast the summer is going by! It’s already mid July and soon school will be starting again and we will be back into the year’s routine again. I hope you’ve all been relaxing a bit this summer. It’s been nice not to have to rush out the door to take my daughter to school in the morning but to take a little extra time to hang out, have breakfast, pat on a longer and more leisurely morning routine (I can even do a mask if I want to!)…
With the summer going by so fast, it’s high time I shared my favorite lightweight summer moisturizers. My skin changes a lot based on the weather, and when it heats up, my usually “normal” skin (not too dry, not too oily) leans more towards the combination side. I still need a lot of hydration to combat my chronic dehydrated skin, but I’m looking for lighter moisturizers that don’t feel like they’re suffocating my skin.
Oil-free moisturizers are great for the summer as they don’t feel greasy, but some of my favorite summer products actually have oils in them, which do a great job of deeply moisturizing without having a thick or heavy consistency. If you need a little extra moisture without wanting a thick cream, products with oils in them (or facial oils mixed with your moisturizer) can be great. If your skin is already oily enough, an oil-free moisturizer will probably do!
Alright, without further ado, here are my favorite lightweight summer moisturizers!
CosRX Oil-Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion with Birch Sap
This light moisturizer uses birch sap as its primary ingredient instead of water. I love the idea of this — birch sap contains antioxidants, minerals, and natural sugars that are supposed to be beneficial for the skin. And it just sounds incredibly refreshing and thirst-quenching for dehydrated skin as well!
In practice, this moisturizer is very hydrating probably due in large part to the hyaluronic acid in it. I found it to have a very slick consistency that many products containing silicone have, and sure enough, dimethicone is one of the top ingredients. This is necessary though, as the dimethicone prevents all that hydrating goodness from evaporating immediately. Although it has silicone in it, it didn’t leave much residue at all. Once it dried down, the CosRX Birch Sap Lotion had a feather light finish that kept my skin hydrated throughout the day without feeling greasy. This makes it a perfect day lotion under your sunscreen.
The CosRX moisturizer would be perfect for those with oily skin who don’t want to add more grease, especially in the summer heat. It feels incredibly soothing and refreshing as you put it on, which makes it a pleasure to use. It has a rather sharp tea tree scent that many CosRX products seem to have (it does have small amounts of lemon peel oil and tea tree oil in it, despite being called “oil free”), but I happen to love sharper herbal scents so I enjoy it.

Papa Recipe Bombee Lotion
How cute is this bottle? I really love the simple but cute packaging design on this.
The Papa Recipe Bombee Lotion was a sleeper hit for me. I ordered it on a whim from a blog friend’s sale (Kinseng.org) because a honey lotion just sounded delicious. As I started using it, I found myself reaching for it again and again. It just had the perfect combination of hydrating with a little extra bit of nourishing richness from the propolis (the second ingredient!), honey, and moisturizing oils in there. While it felt light on my skin, it was a little more moisturizing than the CosRX moisturizer and left my skin feeling soft and relaxed, even the areas that normally feel a bit dry and taut.
In spite of having several oils in there, this lotion spreads out thinly and easily, and when used in moderation, it doesn’t make my face feel greasy. The Bombee Lotion is perfect for people whose skin is a little more on the normal to dry side and need a little extra help moisturizing. I use this on days my skin feels more dry, and I love using this lotion as a moisturizer at night under a sleeping pack.
Do beware though that some of the oils in it can be comedogenic if you have acne-prone skin (jojoba and castor oil, for instance). If you don’t typically break out from oils though, this honey lotion could be your jam ;). For the generous amount of product (5 oz), I feel that the price is very affordable too.

Kuramoto Bijin Hakumai Ferment Milk
The last product I’d like to share is the gorgeous Kuramoto Bijin Ferment Milk. I have to admit, I HAD to buy this because it comes in a sake bottle. It looks exactly (and smells exactly) like nigori sake (coarsely filtered sake). But fortunately the product inside is lovely as well. This is a milky lotion that is about the consistency of a thick toner or essence, so it’s quite runny, but it’s very moisturizing. I use this after my serums/ampoules, and before a heavier moisturizer or sunscreen. I’ve included it here in this moisturizer roundup because you CAN use this as a last step moisturizer if you have oily skin, or if you’re putting a heavier sunscreen on top.
I love this because my skin absorbs it completely, with no residue, just plumper, softer, moisturized skin. It contains rice bran oil (full ingredients can be found on Ratzilla’s review here) so it’s a little richer than most products that have a similar weight, meaning it’s light but highly moisturizing (are you sensing a theme here?). I love this as a moisture booster under a moisturizer (like the Papa Recipe Bombee Lotion or the CosRX Oil Free Lotion above), but on days that I’ve done a good job hydrating, or I’ve used a sheet mask, this is enough all by itself, and my skin feels delightfully light, airy, and free!
