Let me introduce you to my latest brand crush, Juara Skincare. This natural, green beauty brand had been on my radar for a while through the Instagram beauty community, so when Musely offered to send it to me to review, I jumped at the opportunity!
Juara Skincare was founded by four culturally-diverse women. Their line of Asian-inspired skincare is based on the practice of Jamu, a tradition of Indonesian herbal medicine. Not only does this backstory dovetail nicely with the current beauty trend of drawing from ancient traditional medicine, but the products themselves sound good enough to eat, with many formulations drawing from ingredients like rice, tea, cloves, turmeric, coffee, tamarind, and more. They combine these traditional formulations with modern, dermatologist-tested ingredients, all while being free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, gluten, artificial colorants and fragrance. Did I mention they’re also vegetarian-friendly?
Juara Clove Flower and Turmeric Serum Review
My first impression of the Juara Clove Flower and Turmeric Serum was that I loved the packaging. It’s a gorgeous matte brown pump bottle with beautiful gold foil embellishment (that hasn’t rubbed off yet, by the way!) that speaks so well to the herbal Indonesian spa and health treatments on which these products are based. The pump bottle is plastic, but feels good quality, and the pump is smooth and functional.
water, red algae (chondrus crispus) extract, sodium hyaluronate, witch hazel (hamamelis virginiana) water, glycerin, palmitoyl hexapeptide14, goji berry (lycium barbarium) fruit extract, butylene glycol, ethoxydiglycol, clove flower (eugenia carophyllus) extract, watermelon (citrullus lanatus) fruit extract, apple (pyrus malus) fruit extract, lentil (lens esulenta) fruit extract, gold bamboo (bambusa vulgaris leaf/stem extract), xanthan gum, maltodextrin, Indian gooseberry (phyllanthus emblica) extract, tetrahydrocurcuminoids, ferulic acid, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, green tea (camellia sinensis) leaf extract, sodium PCA, sodium lactate, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, sodium levulinate, potassium sorbate
Some bona fide traditional ingredients in there, along with some great proven modern ingredients as well. In case you’re wondering where the turmeric comes in, that’s the tetrahydrocurcuminoids in the ingredient list. Because these are turmeric extracts rather than straight up turmeric, you don’t need to worry about this serum staining your skin yellow, and turmeric is a wonderful antioxidant and skin brightening agent. There is also the powerful humectant sodium hyaluronate, as well as anti-aging peptides and licorice root extract (dipotassium glycyrrhizinate) which is known to brighten skin. I love that there are few fillers in this product.
Texture and Scent
When pumped out, the Juara Clove Flower and Turmeric Serum is a clear, light brown color. It has a light consistency for a serum, and spreads out really thinly with a lot of slip. It feels a lot like other hyaluronic acid-based serums I’ve tried in the past. The light scent is lovely and natural, not like turmeric at all, but more like fresh flowers with a hint of clove.
This serum has kind of a tightening effect on my skin if I don’t follow up with another serum or moisturizer. I’ve found that serums that are high in hyaluronic acid tend to do this to my skin. It could be because the air in my area is so dry, that there’s not much moisture in the air for the hyaluronic acid to pull into my skin. Since this serum is oil-free, it evaporates quickly without sealing in the moisture. In any case, adding another serum or a moisturizer over the Juara serum before it fully dries solves this problem, and I do find that my skin feels more moisturized when I use this serum in my routine, than when I skip it. It leaves my skin looking plump, with fine lines smoothed out, at least temporarily.
I’ve been using the Juara Clove Flower and Turmeric Serum for a few weeks now, and although I can’t say whether it really works for anti-aging (anti-aging products are REALLY long-term skincare), I do love having it in my routine. It’s so pleasant to use, from a wholistic experience standpoint — from the packaging to the scent, to the texture, to the ingredients. I also consistently wake up with even-toned, calm skin that has almost no redness (though I have many products in my routine that help with that).
Honestly, there are few products that make me want to try the whole product line, but this is one of them. And I know I got this free for review, but I’m seriously considering buying a few more Juara products because I’ve enjoyed this so much. I feel like I’m doing a little spa ritual just for myself whenever I use this.
